  • Lead end-to-end hardware design and development
  • Work with real-world constraints and field-deployed devices
  • Help shape how hardware is built in a scaling product team
About the Opportunity

This is a rare opportunity to step into a pivotal hardware engineering role at a venture-backed startup building technology for the built environment. With a product already in market and deployed on real-world construction sites, the focus now is on redesigning and scaling the next generation of the company’s field-deployed camera hardware.

You’ll be the first dedicated hardware hire, taking over responsibilities currently held by the founding CTO. This is a chance to own a full product cycle, from identifying technical improvements through to prototyping, manufacturing, and deployment in a team that values autonomy, execution, and practical problem-solving.

About the Role

You’ll lead the complete redesign of the company’s ruggedised camera hardware system, working to make it smaller, more power-efficient, and capable of supporting new product features such as WiFi, eSIM, video capture, and environmental sensing.

This is a hands-on, high-trust role with broad scope across electronics, firmware, component sourcing, compliance, and field reliability. You’ll collaborate closely with an external product design partner on enclosure and mechanical work, while owning the internal roadmap and delivery of the electrical and embedded system.

You’ll also help solve critical pain points experienced in current deployments such as environmental durability and power limitations and define the foundation for future hardware capabilities.

About You

You’ve taken hardware from concept to production before and understand the practical realities of getting robust devices into the field. You’re comfortable owning the full stack from PCB layout and firmware through to testing and supplier coordination and are motivated by making physical products that work in tough, real-world environments.

You’re someone who thrives in low-structure settings where initiative matters. You don’t need detailed instructions to make progress, and you’re comfortable jumping between hands-on prototyping and long-term design direction. If you’ve worked in a small team or startup environment before and enjoyed wearing multiple hats, you’ll fit right in here.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own end-to-end development of the company’s camera hardware platform
  • Redesign the current system for size, battery life, durability, and connectivity
  • Develop and maintain embedded firmware for core functionality
  • Prototype and validate hardware improvements through iteration and field testing
  • Resolve environmental challenges (e.g. condensation, weatherproofing, power constraints)
  • Collaborate with an external product/manufacturing partner for mechanical design and assembly
  • Prepare hardware for manufacturing, certification, and deployment
  • Develop a roadmap for supporting future hardware features such as video and environmental sensors
  • Work onsite 2–3 days per week, with flexibility
Skills & Experience Must Haves:
  • Broad hardware experience across electronics, firmware, and system design
  • Proven track record taking hardware from design through to production
  • Hands-on capability with prototyping, debugging, and testing
  • Familiarity with compliance and certification processes (e.g. CE, FCC)
  • High initiative and ownership mindset in ambiguous environments
  • Strong communication and ability to work cross-functionally
Nice to Haves:
  • Experience with camera or imaging hardware
  • Familiarity with embedded Linux and firmware for connected devices
  • Exposure to construction, industrial, or ruggedised hardware environments
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers or mechanical design partners
  • Background in environmental sensing, security, or IoT systems
Why You’ll Want This Role
  • Be the driving force behind a new generation of hardware in a growing company
  • Work on real-world tech that’s deployed on job sites across the country
  • Join a high-autonomy team with a practical, builder-first culture
  • Influence both the product and the way hardware is built from the ground up
  • Hybrid flexibility with onsite collaboration 3 days per week
  • Competitive remuneration package
  • Help shape a category-defining product that blends hardware, software, and real-world impact
