About the Company Our client is an established New Zealand financial technology business operating in a complex, highly regulated environment. Their platform supports critical financial processes where accuracy, reliability and auditability genuinely matter.
Following significant growth, the business is undertaking a major technology transformation, progressively rebuilding its platform to support its next stage of growth and future international expansion.
About the Role We’re looking for exceptional Senior and Principal-level Software Engineers to help build the next generation of the platform.
You’ll work across genuine greenfield engineering while progressively modernising complex live financial systems that can’t simply be switched off. There’s no big-bang rewrite - the challenge is designing and building the new world while safely moving capability away from the old.
The new platform is being built around AWS, serverless and event-driven architecture, with problems spanning distributed systems, asynchronous processing, events and messaging, queues, state machines, APIs, NoSQL and Infrastructure as Code.
This is a deeply hands-on role with genuine ownership. You’ll be given problems and outcomes rather than perfectly groomed tickets, and trusted to influence architecture, technical direction and how the systems are ultimately built.
Skills & Experience
You’re likely the engineer others turn to when a problem is complex, ambiguous or particularly important.
We’re more interested in engineering judgement and systems thinking than matching an exact language or framework. You’ll ideally bring:
- Strong experience designing and building complex production systems
- Excellent systems design and engineering judgement
- Understanding of distributed systems, state, retries, failure modes and asynchronous processing
- Experience with cloud-native and event-driven architecture; AWS/serverless experience is highly relevant
- A genuinely hands-on approach with end-to-end ownership of what you build
- Confidence making technical decisions, challenging assumptions and working through ambiguity
- The ability to understand the business problem behind the technology
- Meaningful use of modern AI engineering tools
- Fintech, regulated or other high-consequence systems experience is advantageous, not essential
Why Work Here? - Genuine greenfield engineering alongside a major platform transformation
- Modern AWS, serverless and event-driven architecture
- Solve difficult distributed-systems problems where correctness genuinely matters
- Significant technical influence without having to move into management
- Small, product-oriented teams with genuine end-to-end ownership
- AI is part of the engineering strategy, including opportunities around applied AI
- Wellington, Auckland or remote options considered
- Join at an early stage of the transformation and help shape how the engineering organisation evolves
If you enjoy difficult engineering problems, meaningful technical ownership and building systems where reliability matters, we’d like to hear from you. Apply today or contact logan@talent.army for further information.
