About the Company
Our client is a purpose-driven technology company transforming how environmental and resource management decisions are made across Aotearoa. By bringing together council data, private landholder information and field-collected observations, they help communities see the bigger picture and make better decisions for land and water.
Supporting Māori to thrive as kaitiaki is central to their mission, with Te Ao Māori and Māori data sovereignty embedded in the way they design, build and evolve their technology. It isn’t something that’s been added on top - it’s an integral part of their journey.
About the Role
This is a rare opportunity to become the company’s first in-house engineer. The platform is already live and has been developed over the past three years by an experienced external engineering partner. They’re now bringing engineering capability in-house for the first time, creating a rare opportunity to shape the technical future of the business.
You’ll report to the CEO and work closely with the Business Analyst and Product Lead. None of the leadership team come from deeply technical backgrounds, meaning you’ll genuinely be the most technically experienced person in the business. You’ll take ownership of an established serverless platform, guide architectural decisions, and help the leadership team make confident decisions about the platform’s future. This is a senior individual contributor role with the opportunity to grow into technical leadership as the company expands.
One of your first major projects will be leading the migration of the platform’s portal suite from Angular to React, setting the technical direction for how the platform evolves from here.

What You’ll Own
Ready to make an impact? This role won’t suit everyone. If you prefer well-defined structures and clear direction, this may not be the right environment.
But if you’re motivated by meaningful work, enjoy taking genuine ownership, and want to build technology where Te Ao Māori, Māori world views and supporting Māori to thrive as kaitiaki genuinely shape how software is built, we’d love to hear from you.
